1720’s at Cowes – Half Way! |
|
| The Tuesday of Cowes Week marks the half way point in the series (yes, you really are only half way through) and for the 1720’s the series is still wide open. Conditions have not been easy and predominantly light airs with strong tides have meant that the racing has been tactically demanding; isn’t that why we love Cowes? With a number of boats having to call on their allocated discards early in the series for various different reasons (a flurry of On Course Sides, a grounding and a dispute with an Etchells to name a few) it is hard to predict who is going to win the series. Perhaps the sensible money would have to be on Stephen Porters’ Polyphagus, being ably steered by Alastair Lenz. John Cooper and Bill Vance in Oi! have shown they can clock the right results when necessary but have a bit to do between now and Saturday. The good ship Twister is right up there too, with the Shaun Barber at the helm and his highly irregular crew. Before I take a punt on what happens next I shall be studying the form of the various runners and riders at the now infamous Bowsprit Party on the island this evening. As much as anything, Cowes Week racing does at least suggest that Darwin had it right: For the 1720’s it is very much a case of survival of the fittest. << Back |
